Sustainable transportation with alternative fuels is now being applied to trailers, where the refrigeration unit is powered by a fuel cell. This fuel cell technology offers a relevant alternative to the conventional diesel engine in refrigerated transport, which is responsible for carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and particle emissions.

The required energy for the fuel cell is supplied by stored hydrogen in high-pressure tanks. Due to the direct coupling of the fuel cell with the refrigeration unit, there is no need for a bulky and expensive onboard buffer battery system.
